Basics 101: How to Dress for Your Body Shape

I’m excited to share with you the first post of a new series – Basics 101. Today I wanted to cover body shapes and basics dressing tips for your body. We all know that no two people are built the exact same way, but there are a few “basic body types”, so we can use those as guides for figuring out what works for each of us. Below I’ve tried to outline a simple guide for dressing your body shape, so hopefully you find this useful:

Figuring out Your Body Shape

Your body shape refers to your curves and your measurements ( bust, waist, and hips ). There are about 5 “standard body types”, which are apple, pear, straight, inverted triangle and hourglass.

Pear Body Shape

A pear body shape means that your hip measurements are wider than your bust. Your body is bottom heavy and you have thicker thighs and wider hips.

Apple Body Shape

An apple body shape means that your waistline isn’t as defined and your silhouette is more round. Typically this means that your bust, waist and hip measurements are very similar and you carry the most weight in your torso.

Straight/Rectangle Body Shape

A straight body shape means that you don’t really have any waist definition or you have very small waist definition. Your measurements are all very similar and your silhouette is well… straight.

Inverted Triangle Body Shape

An inverted triangle body shape is when your bust measurements are the biggest, and your hips are very narrow.

Hourglass Body Shape

An hourglass body shape means that your bust and your hip measurements are around the same size and your waist is very defined.

Why Does this Matter?

Alright, now that you’re figuring out the shape of your body you can start to figure out how to dress for your body type. As people, our eyes are naturally drawn to symmetry, so when you know you body type you can start to figure our how to visually balance your outfits and know which styles work best for you. A visually balanced outfit means that you are fooling the eye to make your body seem more symmetrical than it is.

Things to Keep in Mind

Dark colours tend to minimize the look of things whereas lighter and brighter colours tend to accentuate things.

Patterns also add more visual weight and draw your eye to a particular area. Details tend to do the same thing, so things like ruffles, or shoulder pads etc.

Apple Body Shape

Typically for an apple shaped body you want to focus on styles that would define your waist line to give off that visual symmetry.

Items that flatter your body shape:

  • Belts to bring in your waist line
  • Wrap dresses
  • Deeper necklines
  • Longer flowing skirts
  • Wider leg bottoms
  • Bottoms with pattern or detail

Pear Body Shape

With a pear shaped body you would ideally want to balance out your upper body since your hips are larger.

Items that flatter your body shape:

  • Bright coloured or patterned tops
  • Off the shoulder styles
  • Ruffled tops
  • Darker coloured bottoms
  • A-line skirts

Straight/Rectangle Body Shape

With a straight shaped body type you would want to create dimension with your clothing.

  • Skinny jeans
  • Harem style pants
  • Tops with gathered waists
  • Oversized shirts
